Going under cover

Ah, building forts. I'm sure you probably did it as a kid, as did I. There's something about hiding and playing in one's own personally designed hide-out that appeals to little kids, and mine are no different.

There is something about building a fort that is enticing to every kid, I think. I remember building forts when I was a kid, and the two of you enjoy doing the same. Give us a full day at home with no agenda, and eventually the two of you will pull out the blankets and chairs. I love seeing you having fun doing something I enjoyed. And watching you working together—and enjoying it—is a great treat, as well! So keep on building, G*** and E***. Enjoy going under cover!

A day part crazy and part lazy

Here's a recent page I did about an old topic I blogged about back in July 2008. I'm trying to cover some 2008 topics before moving onto more of 2009. Otherwise, I might never get back to those! Anyway, a page to pass the time. Enjoy.

There wasn’t much special about this day, other than that the two of you were stuck inside on a rainy day and getting along surprisingly well. Daddy was out of town, visiting Uncle Seth and Papa and Omi in Colorado, and the three of us were hanging out at home, taking a breather from the hum of everyday life. If Chad had been home, we probably would have come up with something to do on this Saturday, but because you guys were getting along and the weather was dismal, I decided to keep us indoors and take advantage of a lazy summer Saturday.

I love that the pictures capture a glimpse of our everyday lives right now. E, you’re entertaining yourself with simple things like the round basket we keep our extra gloves and Halloween costumes in. You’re excellent at self-entertaining. And G, you’re posing for photos for me, and outside these pictures, you were also hanging out watching a movie, snuggled up with Jack. I also captured a sweet moment between the two of you, building a train track together. G, you were hunting down pieces and putting the track together, while E, you were marking the pieces off the “map” as you went. It was a short-lived moment (G, once you were stuck looking for a piece, you moved on to other things), but it was just a simple moment I want to remember. I also love the shot of you making silly faces together. It captures your love for having fun, something I cherish in the two of you. You guys won’t be this young for long, and soon enough, you’ll be going your separate ways on a daily basis. So I’ll soak it in while I can.

Silly Sayings

G brought home one of those keeper school projects the other day, the kind that will stick around until he's 30-something and I'm cleaning out my house like my mom is doing right now. (And then it will go right back to him!) I know I keep a LOT of his school work—something I'm trying to get better at—but seriously, this one is a real keeper!

His teacher wrote on the chalkboard a bunch of starts to common sayings, and the first graders had to complete the sentences any way they thought fit. They drew pictures to illustrate each sentence, then put them in a little construction paper booklet and titled it, G's Book of Silly Sayings.

Here are G's responses, complete with his inaccurate but way-too-cute spelling: (The more typical responses are at the end of the page.)

• Don't put all your eggs ... in the jack pot.
• Don't count your chicken ... before the jack pot comes in.
• People who live in glass houses ... shouldn't go to the bathroom.
• You can lead a hourse to water but you can't ... make him drownd.
• You can't teach an old dog ... how to drive a trackter.
• Don't bite the hand that ... herts.
• The grass is always greener ... than leavs.
• A penny saved is a ... flying squerl.
• When the cat's away the mice ... will chant we ate the cat!
• Don't put off until tommorrow ... but you can run.

The "real" sayings:

• Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

• You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
• You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
• Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

• When the cat's away, the mice will play.
• Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

Out of sight, out of mind...

...out of MY mind, that is. Things have been crazy around here, and so I haven't had the time or energy to keep up the old blog. I've been sick, busy with kid stuff and crazy-busy with work. So my beloved memory-keeping pastimes, blogging and scrapbooking, have been forced to the back burner. I'm hoping to re-surface soon, though, so don't go anywhere for long. Keep checking back. Hopefully I'll have something of a more interesting post soon. (This is a time when Google Reader would make your keeping up with my little blog much easier! Check it out if you don't use it already.)

In the meantime, here's a recent favorite photo of the two sweetest kiddos around. This was Easter Sunday. Don't they look sweet?! :o) I love these kids!
