It's funny...things have been all about high school recently. It seems to be a very frequent thing to run into old friends (both planned and unexpectedly) from high school in the past few weeks.
First it was the annual Memorial Day Weekend/Race Day party at my old best friend's parents' place. This is an expected one, a time we look forward to each year to see old friends and reconnect. Many of them are people we only see once a year — at that party. But this year we were treated to the presence of that old friend of mine, Billy, who now lives in New York City and hasn't been to his own family's party in about five years, we think. (That's him with me at right—not a great pic of me!) We also caught up with several other high school buddies, many of whom we keep somewhat in touch with but don't often see. (See all of us? Some had already left when this pic was taken.)
I can't resist putting these two pics of the bald boys in! That's my hubby on the right, then Jeff (left) and Billy. They all shave their heads (or, as Chad says, just cut their hair really short) now, and it's just funny to me!
The next high-school-related event was when my husband's old high school buddy, Christen, and her family came over for dinner one night last week. We had run into her and her family at our tiny little church in Danville a few months back (a small-world kind of experience in the first place). She was there attending the baptism of her good friend's baby, and she and Chad connected by e-mail to arrange their visit. It was a good time catching up and getting to know Christen a little better. (She was a little older than I was in school, so I didn't know her well.)
A couple of days later, one of my husband's old high school prom dates just appeared out of nowhere in our neighbor's front yard. Turns out she works with our neighbor in Danville, even though she now lives in Franklin. Small world...
And it just keeps going...
Thursday we gathered at my old friend's house again to see Adam, another high school friend I haven't seen forever. I truly don't think I've seen him since our high school graduation. If I have, it's been maybe once, and several years ago. He was in town from Colorado, and we had the pleasure of meeting his wife, Brenda, and their two adorable little kids. They adopted the cuties from Nepal and had a really interesting story (as so many adoptive parents do).
That's Adam and family at right, and below are a few more family pics. A few of my friends' (Alicia's, Lara's and Kelly's) husbands and Alicia's baby boy weren't there, and I think we might have missed a couple of friends. We got there late...after G's baseball game. Notice the four in the green (Tampa Bay Devil) Rays shirts? That's us.)
Unfortunately, my group photo of the Adam reunion (below) and the picture someone took of our family (not worth posting) didn't turn out very well.
Jeff and Robin and family... (I'm leaving kids' names off, just in case people are protective of their kids' names online like I am.)
Chris, Resa and their baby boy...
Alicia and Lara, plus Lara's family (left) and Kelly and her baby boy (right)...
Finally, yesterday, Chad, E and I were at Dairy Queen eagerly awaiting our ice cream treats (G was at a friend's house), when I heard, "She looks just like you, Corie." I turned to see none other than a good friend of mine from elementary and middle school, Dan Thompson. We had drifted apart a little in high school and I don't believe I've seen him since graduation—13 years ago. I honest to goodness did not even recognize him the first time I had glanced at him. In fact, I wasn't 100 percent sure even when he started talking that is was him. Afraid that I was thinking it was Dan when it wasn't, I kept our conversation to a minimum until we walked to the car and I could confirm with Chad that that was who it was. Then I felt like a complete jerk because I didn't talk much to him. I would love to be able to relive that moment and take the chance to catch up. (Danville folks: Does anyone keep in touch with Dan? If so, have him e-mail me!) We grew up together. His mom babysat us, and I think I was in his same class every single year from kindergarten through elementary school (when we started changing classes).
Anyway, that's the most recent blast from the past. It's fun to see old friends. I wonder who will be next?!
Love the pictures! Maybe I'll actually show up one of these years.
