Storing digital scrapbooking kits

If you are saving kits, don't throw away the "preview" icon (like the one I used in the previous post). There is usually one included in each kit, and those will become invaluable to you as you continue to collect supplies. You can use those preview images to create custom folder icons on your computer, so that in your window that lists all of your digital scrapbooking kits, instead of seeing a bunch of boring yellow file folder icons, you'll see the icons that give you a peek of what's inside each folder. For example, here's a snapshot of what my "kits" folder looks like. (I'm on a Mac, but you can do the same thing on a PC.)

Trust me, this (and having a system for searching your kits...something I'm still working on for my own stash) will save you tons of time as your list of digital scrapbooking kits grows!

A couple of other things to know about storing kits:

• They're space-suckers, so consider storing your kits on an external hard drive, and only keep your favorites on your laptop hard drive.
• Get into the habit of never saving kit pieces once you open them (so you don't accidentally change a paper's size permanently, for example). Always open the element and drag into your project before editing -- or at least click Save As before you change them. The beauty of digital scrapbooking is that kits can last forever, but only if you save them correctly!
  

Have fun shopping or hunting down freebies. If you're like me, you risk getting lost online for hours; just remember to save some time to actually squeeze in some scrapbooking!

I love that idea of the photo for the folder icon! Hadn't thought of that...and to think I'd been trashing all those!
